About Coppélia

Coppélia is a beloved ballet first performed in Paris in 1870. Renowned for its lively music and playful story, this production is inspired by the celebrated choreography of Marius Petipa from the late 1800s.

A Story of Whimsy and Intrigue

Follow the adventures of Swanhilda, a clever heroine, as she navigates a series of comedic and mysterious events to rescue her naive boyfriend, Franz, from the eccentric Dr. Coppelius. The ballet is divided into three acts:

Act I: Village Square

  • The villagers gather to celebrate the Harvest Festival.
  • Dr. Coppelius and his enigmatic "daughter" arrive, sparking a misunderstanding between Swanhilda and Franz.
  • Swanhilda, curious about Dr. Coppelius’s toy shop and his “daughter,” decides to investigate with her friends after he drops his keys. Franz is also drawn to the mystery.

Act II: Coppelius Toy Shop

  • That evening, Swanhilda and her friends sneak into Dr. Coppelius’s shop and discover that Coppelia is actually a mechanical doll.
  • Dr. Coppelius returns, chasing everyone out except for Swanhilda, who cleverly hides.
  • Franz enters, and Dr. Coppelius attempts to transfer Franz’s spirit into the doll. Swanhilda tricks Dr. Coppelius, making him believe the doll has come to life, and she and Franz are joyfully reunited.

Act III: Village Square

  • The following morning, the Harvest Festival continues.
  • Festive dances express gratitude for the harvest and celebrate peace and the passage of time.
